Mahogany Dime LLC
Our Services Mahogany Dime LLC is an arts and entertainment firm based in Durham, NC, home to some of the largest Black owned businesses in the country. At Mahogany Dime, we develop motivational presentations, poetic interludes and dramatic performances tailored to fit the needs of our clients. Our associates have worked with a variety of companies. We seek to present vivid portrayals of the human experience, both past and present, for enlightenment, entertainment and education.
We are available for various types of programs including:
The company began in 1998 under the name “Mahoganee Dime Productions.” The slang term, “dime” was a name given to CEO Angela Ray by a co-worker. She added the “Mahoganee” and gave birth to the company. During that year, the company produced the play Loved Ones both in the spring and fall. For the next year, the company focused on providing entertainment and creative interludes for civic organizations and churches throughout the state of North Carolina. During 1999, the company began incorporating poetry, particularly with the growing popularity of spoken word. Company CEO Angela Ray had been writing poetry for years and studied under Jim Seay while in college, so she seized the mainstream recognition of the art as an opportunity. Mahoganee Dime Productions worked with other poets as well as made strides in the industry along the east coast. Angela Ray, the CEO, participated in several poetry slams, open mics, and literary programs, bringing home first place prizes from DC to South Carolina. In late 2000 Ray began educating herself about the publishing industry with the ultimate goal of beginning a publishing entity within the business. In 2001, motivational speaking was officially added to the list of services provided by the company, though unofficially, it was an integral aspect from day one. Since Ray has an honors degree in Speech Communication as well as numerous awards for public speaking and oratorical contests, this was inevitable. By 2002, the company had a strong client base throughout the southeast. However, one problem some people had was understanding the name, “mahoganee”. After a colleague deleted an email with out reading, based on not recognizing the name “mahoganee”, the spelling was changed and the new name read “Mahogany Dime Productions.” In 2003, with the expansion of its publishing division, the group dropped “productions” from its name and became Mahogany Dime LLC. The company published the book Blackberry Whispers and continued with performances, motivational speaking and poetry. In 2004, the company began its annual Mahogany Dime Awards, a ceremony which acknowledges the efforts of Black women from across North Carolina. During the first year, Ray was presented with a key to the city of Durham, a highly unusual recognition for a resident. In 2005 at the awards ceremony, Durham Mayor Bill Bell proclaimed March 12, 2005 as “Mahogany Dime Day” in the City of Durham. While Mahogany Dime LLC is a business, the company recognizes
its role as a responsible contributor to the entertainment industry and
thus is committed to strong, ethical, and morally conscious involvement.
